Isabel Lancaster Eckles
Isabel Lancaster Eckles (September 8, 1877 - January 25, 1971) was the State Superintendent of Public Instruction for New Mexico.
Early life
[edit]Isabel Lancaster Eckles was born on September 8, 1877, in New Castle, Delaware, the daughter of Samuel H. Eckles (1842-1902) and Mary N. Eckles (1842-1909).[1] With the family, she moved to New Mexico in 1886.[2]
Career
[edit]She was the Superintendent of City Schools in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She was a teacher, registrar, and acting president of the State Teachers' College in Silver City, New Mexico, from 1919 to 1922. For seven years she was the County Superintendent of Schools for Grant County, New Mexico. She was the State Superintendent of Public Instruction for New Mexico from 1923 to 1927.[2]
She was a member of New Mexico State Board of Education from 1927 to 1931. She was the director of the Santa Fe Fiesta. She was an honorary member of the American Woman's Association of New York.[2]
She was a member of the Silver City Woman's Club and the Santa Fe Woman's Club.[2]

Collection consists of the papers of Isabel L. Eckles, 1898-1966. Included are professional certificates and educational awards, professional correspondence, documentation pertaining to Indian education, typescript New Mexico newspaper excerpts concerning New Mexico education and in particular the tenure of Lois Randolph as New Mexico Superintendent of Public Instruction, and personal memorabilia and materials. Professional correspondence relates to Eckles' educational and WPA careers. Documentation on Indian education includes typescript copies of Special Commissioner of Indian Affairs, H.J. Hagerman's addresses to the United States House of Representatives and Senate. Personal memorabilia and materials contain: genealogical materials; clippings, programs, handbooks, and exhibition catalogs from the Museum of New Mexico and the inauguration of Edwin L. Mechem as Governor of New Mexico (1957-1961); issues of El Palacio and the Santa Fe Scene; and various copies of short stories and poems including the memoirs and autobiography of Addison Williams. Also included is an account of the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915 and a personal scrapbook (1893-1927)
