Whatever happened to the supernatural?
If you have lived 50 or more years of your life in the 20th century, then you probably remember when Catholicism was a religion of the supernatural. So much of the faith was concerned with "the other side," where the souls of the faithful were united with God and where we anxiously hoped our souls might find rest someday, enjoying the beatific vision. And there was a constant interchange between these two worlds, the natural and the supernatural. We were protected by guardian angels, supported by our patron saints, beloved especially by our Blessed Mother, and promised instant entrance into heaven by faithfully fulfilling the conditions of the nine First Fridays. We read or heard about holy interventions from the other side into our world in the form of apparitions and stigmata and healing miracles, especially miracles. We had blessed medals and blessed candles and blessed holy cards.

The Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame is set to enshrine 13 inductees Sunday, Dec. 3, including a former U.S. senator, state lieutenant governor, architect and Catholic spiritualist.
The 21st annual Historical Induction Convocation is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Bristol State House and Courthouse at 240 High St., Bristol.
Patrick Conley, president of the Heritage Hall of Fame, will be master of ceremonies, according to a news release.
The inductees are:
— Louis Cappelli, a judge, secretary of state and lieutenant governor who was the first Italian American elected to general office in Rhode Island.
— Sarah J. Eddy, a philanthropist, humanitarian, artist, author, photographer and suffragette.
— Marie Rose Ferron, a Catholic spiritualist who exhibited the stigmata and developed a worldwide following.
— William J. and Thomas F. Gilbane, brothers who founded the Gilbane construction company.
— Christopher LaFarge, an architect and author who wrote novels in verse, some describing life in Rhode Island.
— Archbishop Francis Patrick Keough, leader of the Catholic Church in Rhode Island from 1934 to 1947.
— James Henry Kiernan, a Rhode Island House speaker and architect of the "Bloodless Revolution."
