Born in Jalisco in 1939, Laure grew up listening to an assortment of cross-the-border rockers; he even borrowed the name for his group, Las Cometas, from his favorite, Bill Haley's band. Laure tempered his rock & roll inclinations with Cumbia rhythms learned from Colombia's Sonora Dinamita. The fusion sparked a whole new style of music, termed chunchaca, and Laure scored many Mexican hits during the mid-'60s, including "Banda Borracha," "Rajita de Canela," and "Tiburón, Tiburón." During the early '70s, the most important facet of Laure's band, his cousin Chelo, left for a successful solo career. Despite a few more hits during the mid-'70s, Mike Laure's popularity waned by the 1980s. He was debilitated by a 1990 stroke, though he returned to live performance on a limited basis. Laure's influence stayed strong, however, among several generations of Cumbia artists, from Rigo Tovar in the '70s to Fito Olivares in the '80s to Yahari in the '90s.

    Miguel Laure Rubio (El Salto, Jalisco, México, 29 de septiembre de 1937-Ciudad de México, 19 de noviembre de 2000),[1]​ conocido popularmente por su nombre artístico Mike Laure, fue un músico mexicano.

    Miguel Laure Rubio, inició como músico de rock & roll a finales de los años cincuenta. En 1957 formó su grupo "Mike Laure y sus cometas", como tributo a "Bill Halley & His comets",[2]​ con quienes comenzó con canciones como El Estudiante" haciendo sus primeras presentaciones en Chapala, Jalisco.[3]​ A principios de 1960 decidió experimentar con un nuevo ritmo tropical, la cumbia, y a principios de esa década ya era conocido en el medio, por fusionar ritmos tropicales con el rock and roll. Su primer éxito fue la canción "Tiburón a la vista". Su canción "La banda borracha" encabezó durante algunas semanas las listas de popularidad musical de México hacia 1966, donde también aparecerían sus piezas "Mazatlán" y "Cero 39".[4][5]​ Su popularidad l
