The In-Between Place
Shu Ting (舒婷) is the pen name of Gong Peiyu, a Chinese poet known for being a part of the Misty Poets movement. Born in in Fujian Province, Shu Ting was sent to the countryside to work during the Cultural Revolution, and had to work in harsh conditions, even after she was sent back to Fujian. Her poems began to be published in the underground magazine started by Bei Dao, and she was soon recognized as the leading female poet among the Misty Poets. She published her first poetry collection with Gu Cheng, another leading poet of the time, but during the 80s, especially during the &#;anti-spiritual pollution&#; movement, her non-conforming poetry was heavily criticized. She is known for exploring female sexual attitudes and various human experiences, marking the start of the post-Mao era.
